This little chunk of kitty cat and fuzzy rat cyber space is dedicated to two of my all time favorite pets, my cat, Vianne, and my late rat, Elliott, affectionately known as "Bubby".

Rats are at it again

From sniffing out land mines to now sniffing out tuberculosis, rats are quickly gaining popularity as incredibly useful little noses taking on big jobs. Being so easy to train, cheap to get and care for, and easy to please, it makes sense that these driven little rodents are becoming a fast favorite for jobs such as these. Check out the article from NewScientist.com.

Breeding domestic kitties with a wild side

A litter of four very special Bengal kittens have been born that may fetch a pretty hefty price. The kittens were born to a female Bengal Cat that was bred to a wild male Asian Leopard Cat. As it is very rare for a wild Asian Leopard Cat to cross species for breeding, this is certainly an exciting event for the owners of these beautiful cats. Check out the Article.

What to name the babies?

This coming weekend, Elliott and his sisters are getting a new baby sister and two new baby brothers! Their new baby sister will be Velvet, a beautiful little dumbo PEW girl. One of the new brothers will be a berkshire dumbo and the other is a top-eared black berkshire boy with a little white headspot. The new boys remain nameless so far, so we are on the hunt for baby boy names! The owner of the babies' ratty mom offered these Rat Names for help. Check it out if you are looking for ideas for your new ratty kids!

If you have any name suggestions for the new boys that you would like to share, Click Here or add it to the comments section below.

Have you brushed today?

If you're like a lot of good pet owners, then you may be concerned about your cat's dental health. Especially when it's become so common for older cats to need tooth extractions just so they can comfortably eat their food without the accompanying pain of rotten teeth and diseased gums. Poor dental health can also lead to behavior problems and other health problems. Although it's best to start brushing from an early age, even older cats can learn to appreciate good oral hygiene. Even with regular brushing, it's a good idea to have your cat brought in for professional cleanings as recommended by your vet. Vianne demonstrates her nightly brushing routine in the above photos.

A little something for the kitties...

So it's cold outside, you're bored, and you feel like cooking! Well, maybe not, but if you do, here's a simple and fun recipe to try that's sure to curl your whiskers.

Preheat oven to 350 F

Ingredients:

7 oz. Mashed sardines (2 cans;drained)*
1/4 c. dry non-fat milk
1/2 c. wheat germ

Directions:

Thoroughly mix ingredients together. Roll into approximately 30 balls about the size of a marble. Place on a cookie sheet treated with non-stick cooking spray. Bake until brown, about 12-15 minutes. Let cool before removing. Store soft cookies in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. *Vianne recommends using skinless, boneless sardines canned in spring water instead of oil.

Try it out and post your results by clicking on the comments link or tell all about it on the Furry Friends Forum. If you liked this recipe you can find this one and more here.

Think rats are smart? They may be even smarter!

This January's issue of Scientific American gives yet another bit of reason not to underestimate you rattie's intelligence. Sheesh! My ratties can get into enough mischief without deciphering multiple languages. If they get any smarter, I'm gonna make them start helping me with my math homework! HAHA! Check out the Article. Cats- Domesticated Longer Than We Thought?

I found this article on domestic cats in the January 2005 issue of Discover. Egyptians Not the First To Tame House Cats
I thought it was pretty interesting and wanted to share. The link doesn't offer the entire article, but the rest of it goes on to say that "The two sets of remains were found less than 12 inches apart, positioned symmetrically with their heads facing west. Subsequent examination showed that a small grave had been deliberately dug out and the body of the cat placed in it, then rapidly covered. ...The cat-Felis silvestris lybica, a form of wildcat somewhat larger than today's domestic cat-was only eight months old. It may have been sacrificed, says Vigne, to accompany its owner on the journey to the next world. -Eric Levin"
So I guess people have been devoted to their furry felines a lot longer than we thought!

Introducing my very own...

Cats N Rats:

The cats from left to right are Isis, Kodak and Vianne. All were fosters, but Vianne is here to stay.

The ratties clockwise from left are Scarlett, Elliott, Noni and Pixie. Scarlett went off to the Rainbow Bridge back in November and she is missed dearly, but the other three are happily still amusing me on a daily basis!

I really love cats and rats and although I've visited several sites dedicated to one or the other, I have yet to find one that welcomes both. The solution? I made my own! I hope you enjoy your visits to my wonderful new site :)

Image hosting by TinyPic Note: Due to the large amount of chaos in my life currently, I will not have time to update this main page on a regular basis. I have changed my settings so that only one blog post will be seen on the main page at a time. This way you won't be seeing a string of old posts taking up space on here. They are not deleted. You can simply view them in the archives. So if it appears that I have not been around for awhile, I'm still here, just haven't had time for adding new blogs. I will, however, be trying to keep up with the Furry Friends Forum, so I'll see you in there!

Purrs and Bruxes,

Image hosting by TinyPic Elliott blessed my life as a tiny one week old pup several years ago. I hand-raised him and we shared a very special bond. He will forever remain, not only one of my favorite rats, but also a favorite pet as well. Read his story in my April 2, 2005 post of his obituary.

Image hosting by TinyPic Vianne decided to own me back in January of 2004. At the time, I was working in an Animal Control Clinic as a vet assistant. Entering the shelter as a stray and after having already gone through her vet exam, work-up, and being a Pet Pal candidate for adoption, it was determined that she had been exposed to a URI from her littermate and was being held on observation for signs of illness. During those few days, I absolutely fell in love with this tiny ball of fur that would simply purr and "hug" me as I held her, not try to squirm away like most kittens. When she began a sneezing fit, she was placed on the euthanasia list. I simply could NOT allow such a sweet heart to be lost that way. I immediately signed up for kitten fostering and she has been a bundle of laughs and a dear friend ever since!
